What Does A Red Maltipoo Look Like?

Red Maltipoos feature a coat that can be anywhere from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color. They may also feature a small white patch on their chest or paws however these as technically Red and White Maltipoos. Maltipoos can only be this color is the Poodle has a red coat as purebred Malteses are never red. Their coats can come in various textures including curly, wavy or straight.

Like all Maltipoos, Red Maltipoos have a small stature with a round face shape, round eyes, a button nose and floppy ears. Their overall size really depends on what size of Poodle was originally crossed with the Maltese but all sizes are still quite small so Maltipoos generally look like puppies for their whole lives.

Are Red Maltipoos Rare?

Red Maltipoos are pretty rare. Only the Poodle carries the genes for a red coat so Red Maltipoos are usually only seen in later generations such as back-cross generations. This is because there is a greater percentage of Poodle genes in back-cross generations (e.g. F1b Maltipoos) and a higher chance for the Maltipoo to carry the gene for a red coat.

Apricot vs Red Maltipoo

The main difference between an Apricot Maltipoo and a Red Maltipoo is the intensity of the red color of their coat. “Red” is usually used as a blanket term to describe every shade of red coat from light to dark while “Apricot” is specifically used for Maltipoos that have a very light red coat. Apricot Maltipoos often have peachy undertones in their coat and sometimes they are so light that they are nearly cream in color.

Coat Types

There are three main coat types Red Maltipoos can have: wavy, curly or straight. Wavy and curly coats are the most common while straight coats are seen in Maltipoo generations that have a a very high percentage of Maltese genes over Poodle genes

Curly Hair

Curly coats are much denser and thicker than straight or wavy coats and more closely resemble the coat of a Poodle. Curly hair Red Maltipoos are usually more hypoallergenic than other coat types as they shed less and therefore release less dander into their immediate environment. This coat type is more commonly seen in back-cross generations e.g. F1b, F1bb, F2b Maltipoos etc.

Straight Hair

Straight Hair Red Maltipoos usually look more like Malteses than Poodles. Their coats are very silky and much thinner than curly coats. Straight hair Maltipoos are usually seen in 50-50 Maltese to Poodle generations or reverse generations where there is a higher percentage of Maltese than Poodle genes.

Wavy Hair

Red Maltipoos with wavy hair feature light, loose waves. Sometimes wavy coats are very soft and smooth while other times they can have a wiry texture. This coat type is usually seen in first or second generation Maltipoos e.g. F1 or F2 Maltipoos.

Coat Variations

Light Red Maltipoo

In reality, Light Red Maltipoos are Apricot Maltipoos as they have such a light colored coat. Quite a few Red Maltipoos end up being Light Red Maltipoos as their coats fade with age.

Fox Red Maltipoo

Red Fox Maltipoos have a rich foxy red colored coat. There is nothing unique that sets a Red Fox Maltipoo apart from any other Red Maltipoo, it’s just another name for the same colored dog.

Dark Red Maltipoo

Dark Red Maltipoos have a very deep red colored coat. It can also have brown undertones so some Dark Red Maltipoos look more like Brown Maltipoos.

Coat Color Changes

Do Maltipoos Change Color?

Red Maltipoos can change color if they inherit the ‘fading’ or ‘dilution’ gene from the Poodle. These changes will usually occur within the first two years of their life however not all Red Maltipoos will change color. If a Red Maltipoo changes color, their coat will fade to a light red or apricot color. Coat color changes can also occur from UV light exposure so if your Red Maltipoo spends a lot of time out in the sun it is likely that their coat will undergo some fading.

Red Maltipoo Price

Red Maltipoos usually sell for prices between $2500USD and $6500USD however most sell for prices around $4000USD. They are generally more expensive than the average Maltipoo as the coat color is quite rare.
