What Is An F3 Goldendoodle?

An F3 Goldendoodle is the third generation of the breed created by breeding an F2 Goldendoodle with another F2 Goldendoodle. They are 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle.

The “F” in F3 Goldendoodle means “filial” and the “3” means third generation. “Filial” is simply a way to denote generation.

What Does An F3 Goldendoodle Look Like?

F3 Goldendoodles look very similar to F1 and F2 Goldendoodles. This is because they have the same genetic makeup. They look like a fluffy teddy bears because of their soft coats, dark brown eyes and black noses. That being said, it is easier to predict the appearance of an F3 Goldendoodle than an F1 or F2 Goldendoodle by looking at the two parents.

As for their coats, they can either be wavy, curly or straight but in more cases than not they will be wavy. You are much more likely to find curly coats in cross-back generations such as F1b, F1bb or F2b while you are more likely to find straight coats in reverse back-cross generations. This is because reverse generations are bred back to the Golden Retriever rather than the Poodle.

F3 Goldendoodles usually sell for prices between $2200USD and $4200USD. Sometimes F3 Goldendoodles are more expensive than first generation Goldendoodles because their appearance is more predictable and people like that certainty. They also take longer to breed than first generation Goldendoodles. That being said, it can be argued that the price increase isn’t logical as with each successive generation, hybrid vigour decreases.

F3 Goldendoodles are a comparable size to F1 Goldendoodles and F2 Goldendoodles. The size of an F3 Goldendoodle depends upon whether the Golden Retriever was bred with a Teacup, Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle.

F3 Teacup Goldendoodle

A F3 Teacup Goldendoodle reaches a height of 8 to 13 inches (20.3cm to 33cm) at the shoulder. They weigh between 7 and 10 pounds (3.2kg to 4.5kg).

The age a F3 Goldendoodles is full grown depends on their size.

Do F3 Goldendoodles Shed?

F3 Goldendoodles do not shed much at all. They are classified as as a light to non-shedding breed. One of the reasons why the Poodle was originally crossed with the Golden Retriever was to reduce the heavy shedding trait of the Golden Retriever whilst retaining its good nature and temperament.

The best way to reduce the amount that your dog sheds is to regularly brush them. Slicker brushes are great for dogs with single coats and deshedding tools are great for dogs with double coats.

Are F3 Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic?

Yes, F3 Goldendoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic. Dogs are hypoallergenic when they don’t shed much and therefore don’t release much allergy inducing dander (dead skin cells) into their immediate environment.

While F3 Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic, they are not as hypoallergenic as other generations of the breed. Cross-back generations such as F1b, F1bb and F2b Goldendoodles are much more hypoallergenic as F3 Goldendoodles are they have a higher percentage of Poodle genes. This is because Poodles are hypoallergenic while Golden Retrievers are not.

F3 Goldendoodle Temperament

F3 Goldendoodles are highly excitable dogs by nature. They love spending time around people and other animals alike and are so affectionate and gentle. F3 Goldendoodles are keen to please which makes them pretty easy to train. They are also relatively easy to care for. The only real complaint of owners is the constant grooming requirements of Goldendoodles.

F3 Goldendoodle Lifespan

On average, F3 Goldendoodles live for 10 to 14 years however it can be less if they are one of the smaller sizes of the breed (e.g. Teacup). F3 Goldendoodles may have a slightly shorter lifespan than first generation Goldendoodles as with each successive generation the health benefits of cross-breeding decreases. That being said, the differences in lifespan between generations is pretty negligible.

Red F3 Goldendoodle

Red F3 Goldendoodles come in a variety of shades from light red to dark red. Their coats can be anywhere from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color. F3 Goldendoodles with lighter red coats are usually called Apricot Goldendoodles.

Red F3 Goldendoodles are quite common. Red is a dominant Poodle gene so it’s likely that many of the puppies in the litter will inherit this coat color.

Black F3 Goldendoodle

Black F3 Goldendoodles feature a solid black coat. They may have small white patches over their body like on their chest or paws however these as technically Black and White Goldendoodles. F3 Goldendoodles can only be this color if they inherit it from the Poodle as purebred Golden Retrievers are never black. They are therefore more commonly found in back-cross generations such as F1b, F1bb or F2b Goldendoodles.

Cream F3 Goldendoodle

Cream F3 Goldendoodles have an off-white coat. Some Cream Goldendoodles have black noses while others have light brown or beige noses. Cream F3 Goldendoodles are often mistaken for Labradoodles because they are so light in color. It is not a rare coat color as they can inherit it from either the Poodle or the Golden Retriever.

F3 Goldendoodle Coat Types

There are three main coat types F3 Goldendoodles can have: wavy, curly or straight hair. Wavy coats are the most common for F3 Goldendoodles and curly coats are the next most common. Very curly coats are generally seen in cross back generations such as F1b or F1bb Goldendoodles as they have a higher percentage of Poodle genes. Straight coats are pretty rare for F3 Goldendoodles as they are usually seen in reverse Goldendoodle generations where the Goldendoodle has been bred back to a Golden Retriever instead of a Poodle.

The main difference between an F1b and F3 Goldendoodle is the genetic makeup. An F1b Goldendoodle is 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle while an F3 Goldendoodle is 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle.

F1b Goldendoodles are generally taller and leaner than F3 Goldendoodles. They may also have more hypoallergenic and curlier coats than F3 Goldendoodles.
