Is There Such Thing As A Toy Goldendoodle?

Yes, there is such thing as a Toy Goldendoodle however they are not as common as larger sizes. Toy Goldendoodles are sometimes called Petite Goldendoodles. In this article we refer to this size of Goldendoodle as Toy but be aware that it is interchangeable for “petite”.

A Toy Goldendoodle is a cross between a Toy Poodle and a Golden Retriever. They are a calm, easy going and friendly dog that are very small in size with soft, fluffy coats which come in many different colors like gold, caramel and chocolate.

What Makes A Toy Goldendoodle?

A first generation Toy Goldendoodle is made by crossing a Toy Poodle with a small Golden Retriever. There are also multigenerational and crossback generations of Toy Goldendoodles where they breed two Toy size Goldendoodles together or a Toy Goldendoodle with a Toy Poodle.

Toy Goldendoodles get to 10 to 16 inches (25.4cm to 40.6cm) tall at the shoulder. They get to a weight of 10 to 25 pounds (4.5kg to 11.3kg) when fully grown. They are slightly smaller than the Miniature Goldendoodle and slightly bigger than the Teacup Goldendoodle.

What Size Crate For A Toy Goldendoodle?

A Toy Goldendoodle needs a small crate. The best way to measure them for a crate is to measure the length from their nose to the base of their tail, then add 2 or 3 inches for the crate measurements.

Toy Goldendoodle Lifespan

On average, Toy Goldendoodles live for 10 to 14 years. Nevertheless, their lifespans can vary depending upon their genetics, any health conditions they develop, their lifestyle and diet etc. While the general rule is that small dogs live longer than big dogs, the small size of a Toy Goldendoodle doesn’t necessarily mean that they have a longer lifespan as they usually suffer from more health issues than larger Goldendoodles.

Are Toy Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic?

Yes, Toy Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic as they are a low shedding breed and therefore do not release much allergy inducing dander into their surroundings. Toy Goldendoodles that have a higher percentage of Poodle genes such as F1b Toy Goldendoodles are even more hypoallergenic than 50/50 Poodle to Golden Retriever mixes.

Toy Goldendoodle Exercise Needs

As Toy Goldendoodles are smaller than Standard Goldendoodles they do not require as much exercise each day but that does not mean they don’t need anything. They are still a very energetic dog, so require at least half an hour daily to expel all their energy.

Toy Goldendoodles are very intelligent so they respond very well to training. You should start teaching your Toy Goldendoodle basic commands such as their name, sit, stay and come from the moment they arrive home. You can then progress to more difficult tricks and commands.

When training your dog it is important to use positive reinforcement techniques as dogs repeat good behavior when it is followed by a reward such as a treat or their favorite toy. Clicker training is another type of positive reinforcement training that is a good method for learning new tricks. You use a clicker device so your dog can associate a new behavior with a click and then a reward.

Toy Goldendoodle Grooming

Toy Goldendoodles need to be groomed every 6 to 10 weeks. If you prefer that your Goldendoodle has a shorter coat at all times they need to be groomed every 6 to 8 weeks. If you prefer a longer coat, they should be groomed every 8 to 10 weeks. This can be done at a professional groomer or you can learn how to cut your dog’s hair at home from watching YouTube videos and investing in a dog grooming kit.

The best way to reduce the amount that your dog sheds is to regularly brush them. Slicker brushes are great for dogs with single coats and deshedding tools are great for dogs with double coats.

Toy Goldendoodle Colors

Toy Goldendoodles come in many different colours such as gold, white, english cream, red, apricot, chocolate, black and merle. As they are a mixed breed dog, there are many different colour combinations and patterns their coats can come in. Be aware that the colour of a Goldendoodle’s coat can affect the price of the dog with rarer color fetching much higher prices.

F1 Toy Goldendoodle

An F1 Toy Goldendoodle is the first generation of the breed created by crossing a purebred Golden Retriever (usually on the smaller side) with either a purebred Toy Poodle. An F1 Toy Goldendoodle is 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Toy Poodle.

As it is difficult to create the Toy size of Goldendoodle, sometimes breeders breed two Mini Goldendoodles that are on the smaller side together until they consistently get the Toy Goldendoodle size. Some breeders may therefore call a Mini x Mini Goldendoodle mix a F1 Goldendoodle.

F1b Toy Goldendoodle

The “F” in F1b Goldendoodle means “filial”, the “1” means first generation and the “b” means back-cross. An F1b Toy Goldendoodle is the first back-cross generation created by crossing an F1 Toy Goldendoodle with a purebred Toy Poodle. The resulting dog is 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle.

F1bb Toy Goldendoodle

An F1bb Toy Goldendoodle is a cross between an F1b Goldendoodle (Toy Goldendoodle x Toy Poodle) and a purebred Toy Poodle. They are 12.5% Golden Retriever and 87.5% Toy Poodle. This generation is very rare and you are unlikely to find an F1bb Toy Goldendoodle as F1bb’s are more common in the standard or miniature size.

F2 Toy Goldendoodle

An F2 Toy Goldendoodle is the second generation of the breed created by breeding a F1 Toy Goldendoodle with another F1 Toy Goldendoodle. They are 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Toy Poodle.

F2b Toy Goldendoodle

An F2b Toy Goldendoodle is the second cross-back generation that is usually created by crossing an F1 Toy Goldendoodle with a F1B Goldendoodle. They are 62.5% Toy Poodle and 37.5% Golden Retriever. Other breeders create F2b Toy Goldendoodles by crossing a F2 Toy Goldendoodle with a purebred Toy Poodle. These F2b Toy Goldendoodles are 25% Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and 75% Poodle.

This generation is quite rare. If you would like a cross-back Toy Goldendoodle, you are more likely to find a F1b Toy Goldendoodle than a F2b Toy Goldendoodle.
