As a mixed breed there can be a lot of variation in Maltipoo size depending on the size of Poodle the Maltese is bred with. The 4 most common Maltipoo sizes are the Teacup, Toy, Mini & Standard size. A Teacup Maltipoo is the smallest size of Maltipoo. It originates from a cross between a Toy Poodle and a Maltese where the breeder then takes the runt of the litter and continues breeding smaller and smaller sized Maltipoo puppies until they consistently get the teacup size. Therefore, Teacup Maltipoos are a multigenerational mix breed and you won’t find an F1 (first generation) one.

Teacup Maltipoos are also sometimes referred to as Micro Teacup Maltipoos. They are both the exact same size. Recently it has become popular by breeders to use the word “Micro” in naming Poodle Mix sizes as a marketing tactic so it seems that they are selling a new, tinier dog size.

Teacup Maltipoo Temperament

Teacup Maltipoos have an affectionate and gentle temperament. They are highly suited to apartment living due to their tiny size. While they get along very well with people, their sociability rating is low because they can’t socialise with other larger dogs as they are too small. They also can’t socialise with young children as they can be easily injured.

As they are such a small breed, they have to do most of their exercise indoors or in their own backyard. They love to play with treat-stuffed mini Kong chew toys or play fetch with mini tennis balls that are specially made for tiny breeds!

Teacup Maltipoos get to a height of 6 to 7 inches (15.2cm to 17.8cm) when fully grown and weighs around 5 pounds (2.3kg). Their very small size makes them extremely delicate and fragile. It also makes them much more susceptible to size related health issues which can be debilitating such as poor bone density, heart defects, kidney problems etc. This is one of the main issues of breeding dogs that are too small.

How Much Does A Teacup Maltipoo Weigh?

On average, a Teacup Maltipoo weighs about 5 pounds (2.3kg) however they can be slightly heavier. Sometimes Maltipoos that are in fact “toy” sized are called Teacup Maltipoos which is one reason why they may weigh more than this weight range.

How Long Do Teacup Maltipoos Live?

Unfortunately due to their high susceptibility to health issues, Teacup Maltipoos have the shortest lifespan out of all the Maltipoo sizes. They usually live for 7 to 9 years however they can pass away at even younger ages if they develop health complications.

Are Teacup Maltipoos Hypoallergenic?

Yes, Teacup Maltipoos are classified as a hypoallergenic breed. The size of a Maltipoo, whether they are teacup, toy, miniature or standard sized doesn’t affect how hypoallergenic they are. Teacup Maltipoos are hypoallergenic because they are low shedding and produce only a minimal amount of dander.

You can make your dog even more hypoallergenic by keeping up a good grooming routine as it will stop them from releasing allergens into your home.

Your dog’s grooming routine should include both brushing and bathing. A brush down with a slicker brush every other day is ideal to remove any loose hairs. As for washing, a bath with a gentle dog shampoo every 3 months will remove dead skin cells, dirt and debris.

If barking does become an issue, it’s best to firstly try to retrain your dog out of the habit with positive reinforcement techniques. What Is A Toy Maltipoo?

A Toy Maltipoo is a cross between a Toy Poodle and a Maltese. Toy Maltipoos are an affectionate, gentle and fun-loving dog that are very small in size making them super adorable. They have soft wavy coats with short floppy ears and a button nose giving them the appearance of a teddy bear. Toy Maltipoos come in many colors but they are most commonly cream, white, grey or apricot.

Toy Maltipoos are fun-loving, devoted, gentle and affectionate. Toy Maltipoos are slightly easier to care for compared to Teacup Maltipoos as they are not as fragile. Nevertheless, they are also not suited to being around young children unattended.

Yes, Toy Maltipoos are hypoallergenic. The size of a Maltipoo, whether they are teacup, toy, miniature or standard sized does not effect how hypoallergenic they are. The generation of the breed is more influential on how much a Maltipoo sheds. For example an F1b and other cross-back generations tend to be more hypoallergenic as they have a higher percentage of Poodle genes.
