What Does A Black Goldendoodle Look Like?

Black Goldendoodles feature a solid black coat. They may have small white patches over their body like on their chest or paws however these as technically Black and White Goldendoodles. Goldendoodles can only be this color if they inherit it from the Poodle as purebred Golden Retrievers are never black.

Are Black Goldendoodles Rare?

Black Goldendoodles are quite rare and you only really find them in second or third generation litters or back-cross generations. This is because the gene for a black coat can only be introduced from the Poodle side and the black gene is recessive.

Coat Types

There are three main coat types Black Goldendoodles can have: wavy, curly or straight hair. Wavy and curly coats are the most common. Straight coats are pretty rare for Black Goldendoodles as they are usually seen in reverse Goldendoodle generations where the Goldendoodle has been bred back to a Golden Retriever instead of a Poodle. Reverse Goldendoodles are hardly ever black as they have a higher percentage of Golden Retriever genes than Poodle genes.

Black Curly Goldendoodle

Most Black Goldendoodles have curly coats. They are much denser and thicker than wavy coats and more closely resemble the coat of a Poodle. Curly coats are one of the most common coat types as most Black Goldendoodles are from cross-back generations where the Goldendoodle has been bred back to a Poodle e.g. F1b, F1bb and F2b Goldendoodles. Curly coats are usually more hypoallergenic than other coat types.

Black Wavy Goldendoodle

Wavy coats are the next most common Black Goldendoodle coat type. Their coats feature light, loose waves which gives them a teddy bear appearance. Wavy coats are generally easier to groom than curly coats as they are easier to brush.

Black Goldendoodle Straight Hair

Straight hair coats are extremely rare for Black Goldendoodles as straight hair usually occurs in generations that have a higher percentage of Golden Retriever genes than Poodle genes and the black coat color can only be inherited from the Poodle. They are usually not as hypoallergenic as wavy or curly coat Goldendoodles.

Coat Color Changes

Do Black Goldendoodles Change Color?

Yes, many Black Goldendoodle puppies change color if they have inherited the ‘fading’ gene from the Poodle side. Black Goldendoodles may fade into a dark blue or silver color as they mature. While their coat may fade, their nose and paw pads will still be jet black.

Usually most of their coat is grey and blue with white and tan patches throughout it. They usually have jet black noses and dark brown or hazel eyes however they can sometimes have blue eyes. In this case the solid color is black and the patches are brown.
