Medium Goldendoodle Colors

Medium Red Goldendoodle

Medium Red Goldendoodles come in a variety of shades from light red to dark red. Their coats can be anywhere from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color. Medium Goldendoodles with lighter red coats are usually called Apricot Goldendoodles.

Medium Red Goldendoodles are not rare. Red is a dominant Poodle gene so if a Golden Retriever is bred with a Red Poodle it is likely that many of the puppies in the litter will inherit this coat color.

Medium Apricot Goldendoodle

Medium Apricot Goldendoodles have very light red coats with a peachy tone. They are somewhere between a light red and a cream. Only the Moyen Poodle carries the genes for an apricot coat so Apricot Medium Goldendoodles are usually created by breeding an Apricot or Red Poodle with a light Golden Retriever. They are one of the most sought after Goldendoodle coat colors.

Medium White Goldendoodle

Medium White Goldendoodles look a lot like Labradoodles as they are so pale. They feature a solid pure white coat that can be curly or wavy and usually have black noses and dark colored eyes. White Goldendoodles are quite rare and are only really seen in back-cross generations such as F1b, F1bb or F2b. If you want to know more about this rare coat color, read our White Goldendoodles guide here.

Medium Cream Goldendoodle

Medium Cream Goldendoodles have an off-white coat. Some Cream Goldendoodles have black noses while others have light brown or beige noses. Cream Goldendoodles are often mistaken for Labradoodles because they are so light in color.

Medium Chocolate Goldendoodle

Medium Chocolate Goldendoodles have a solid brown coat that can range from a very light shade to a dark brown. They inherit this coat color from the Poodle side. Brown coats were originally a result of a mutation of the gene that produces a black coat. It is a recessive gene so both parents need to carry it to get a Chocolate Goldendoodle. That is why Medium Chocolate Goldendoodles are more commonly found in back-cross generations such as an F1b, F1bb or F2b Goldendoodle.

Medium Black Goldendoodle

Medium Black Goldendoodles feature a solid black coat. They may have small white patches over their body like on their chest or paws however these as technically Black and White Goldendoodles. Goldendoodles can only be this color if they inherit it from the Poodle as purebred Golden Retrievers are never black.

Medium Merle Goldendoodle

A Medium Merle Goldendoodle carries the merle gene which dilutes certain sections of their coat into mottled patches. This gene also affects eye color and skin pigmentation on the nose and paws so Merle Goldendoodles often have very light eye colors such as blue and often have pink patches on their nose and paws. They can either be a Blue Merle or Chocolate Merle (Red Merle) Goldendoodle.

Medium Goldendoodle Haircuts

There are many different haircuts that you can give a Medium Goldendoodle. Some popular ones include:

  • Teddy Bear Cut
  • Puppy Cut
  • Summer Cut
  • Lamb Cut

Teddy Bear Cut

The Teddy Bear Cut is a very common haircut for Medium Goldendoodle. As the name suggests, it gives Goldendoodles the appearance of being a teddy bear. The length of hair is between 0.5 and 1.5 inches on the body while leg and paw hair is kept quite short. What really gives Goldendoodles the teddy bear appear is trimming the head into a rounded shape with scissors. Their face hair is then blended into their body hair.

Puppy Cut

The Puppy Cut is probably the second most popular haircut. Their hair is cut to 1.5 inches all over their body and legs. Ear hair is also left quite long. Some dog groomers don’t distinguish between Puppy Cuts and Teddy Bear Cuts as they are so similar but generally the length of hair is longer in a Puppy Cut than a Teddy Bear cut.

Summer Cut

The Summer Cut is most popular for Medium Goldendoodles during warm weather months as it will keep them feeling cool. It’s a very simple haircut where all of their hair is cut down to 0.5 inches or less all over their body. Be careful when asking a groomer for this haircut as some will interpret it as a full shave however shaving a dog isn’t always the best idea. This is because it increases the risk of sunburn, skin cancer and heat stroke. Their hair also may not grow back the same.

Lamb Cut

Lamb Cuts are most commonly done on Goldendoodles that have curly hair or a wool coat. As the name suggests, it gives them the appearance of a lamb. The length of body hair is roughly 1 inch and then their leg hair is left a bit longer with rounding on their paws. Their faces are generally trimmed leaving quite long ear hair length.
