What Does F2 Goldendoodle Mean?

The “F” in F2 Goldendoodle means “filial” and the “2” means second generation. “Filial” is simply a way to denote generation. If a Goldendoodle is F2, it means that it is a second generation puppy – the result of crossing a first generation Goldendoodle with another first generation Goldendoodle.

What Is An F2 Mini Goldendoodle?

An F2 Mini Goldendoodle is the second generation of the breed created by breeding a F1 Mini Goldendoodle with another F1 Mini Goldendoodle. They are 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Miniature Poodle

What Does An F2 Goldendoodle Look Like?

F2 Goldendoodles look just like F1 Goldendoodles. This is because they have the same genetic makeup. They look like a fluffy teddy bears because of their soft coats, dark brown eyes and black noses. That being said, it is easier to predict the appearance of an F2 Goldendoodle than an F1 Goldendoodle by looking at the two parents.

As for their coats, they can either be wavy, curly or straight but in more cases than not will be wavy. You are much more likely to find curly coats in cross-back generations such as F1b, F1bb or F2b while you are more likely to find straight coats in reverse back-cross generations. This is because reverse generations are bred back to the Golden Retriever rather than the Poodle.

What Is The Difference Between An F1 and F2 Goldendoodle?

The main difference between an F1 and F2 Goldendoodle is how they are produced. F1 Goldendoodles are created by breeding a Golden Retriever with a Poodle while F2 Goldendoodles are produced by breeding an F1 Goldendoodle with another F1 Goldendoodle.

As they both have the same genetic makeup of 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever, F1 and F2 Goldendoodles have very similar physical characteristics and temperaments. That being said, the appearance of F2 Goldendoodles is generally much more predictable than F1 Goldendoodles. The main downside of F2 Goldendoodles is that they are considered to have less hybrid vigour than F1 Goldendoodles.

The height and weight ranges of F2 Goldendoodles are generally the same as F1 Goldendoodles.

F2 Teacup Goldendoodle

F2 Teacup Goldendoodles are the smallest Goldendoodle size. A Teacup F2 Goldendoodle reaches a height of 8 to 13 inches (20.3cm to 33cm) at the shoulder and weighs between 7 and 10 pounds (3.2kg to 4.5kg).

While it is possible to create a second generation Teacup Goldendoodles, this size of Goldendoodle is usually seen in third or later generations. This is because it usually takes multiple generations of breeding Toy Goldendoodle runts together to produce the Teacup size. You can read our Teacup Goldendoodle guide here to find out more about this Goldendoodle size!

F2 Toy Goldendoodle

A Toy F2 Goldendoodle gets to a height of 10 to 16 inches (25.4cm to 40.6cm) at the shoulder and weighs between 10 and 25 pounds (4.5kg to 11.3kg). They are the second smallest F2 Goldendoodle size.

F2 Goldendoodle Shedding

Do F2 Goldendoodles Shed?

F2 Goldendoodles are classified as light to non-shedders. They only drop a little bit of hair here and there throughout the year and do not go through heavy seasonal shedding like other breeds.

The best way to reduce the amount that your dog sheds is to regularly brush them. Slicker brushes are great for dogs with single coats and deshedding tools are great for dogs with double coats.

It is important to realise that there is no such thing as a totally non-shedding dog and that Goldendoodles along with other Poodle mixes are the closest to this definition.

Are F2 Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic?

F2 Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic as they are a low shedding breed and therefore do not release much allergy inducing dander into their surroundings. That being said, there are other generations of Goldendoodle that are more hypoallergenic than F2 Goldendoodles. For example, F1b Goldendoodles are usually more hypoallergenic as they have a higher percentage of Poodle genes than F2 Goldendoodles. The same goes with F1bb and F2b Goldendoodles. This is because Poodles are hypoallergenic while Golden Retrievers are not.

F2 Goldendoodle Temperament

F2 Goldendoodles are highly excitable dogs by nature. They love spending time around people and other animals alike and are so affectionate and gentle. F2 Goldendoodles are keen to please which makes them pretty easy to train. They are also relatively easy to care for.

All in all, the generation of Goldendoodle does not have much affect on temperament. F2 Goldendoodles can have the same or very similar temperaments to F1 Goldendoodles or F1b Goldendoodles. Besides individual genetics, environment and age can have a big impact on temperament.

F2 Goldendoodle Lifespan

On average, F2 Goldendoodles live for 10 to 14 years however it can be less if they are one of the smaller sizes of the breed (e.g. Teacup). F2 Goldendoodles may have a slightly shorter lifespan than an F1 Goldendoodles as with each successive generation the health benefits of cross-breeding decreases. That being said, the differences in lifespan between generations is pretty negligible.

F2 Goldendoodle Coat Colors

There are many coat colors that second generation Goldendoodle can come in however some are much rarer than others. Black, chocolate and pure-white coats are possible in second generation Goldendoodles however they are much rarer than common coat colors like red, apricot and english cream.

Red F2 Goldendoodle

Red F2 Goldendoodles come in a variety of shades from light red to dark red. Their coats can be anywhere from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color. F2 Goldendoodles with lighter red coats are usually called Apricot Goldendoodles.

Red F2 Goldendoodles are quite common. Red is a dominant Poodle gene so it’s likely that many of the puppies in the litter will inherit this coat color.

English Cream F2 Goldendoodle

English Cream F2 Goldendoodles have an off-white coat. Some English Cream Goldendoodles have black noses while others have light brown or beige noses. English Cream F2 Goldendoodles are often mistaken for Labradoodles because they are so light in color. It is not a rare coat color as they can inherit it from either the Poodle or the Golden Retriever.

Black F2 Goldendoodle

Black F2 Goldendoodles feature a solid black coat. They may have small white patches over their body like on their chest or paws however these as technically Black and White Goldendoodles. F2 Goldendoodles can only be this color if they inherit it from the Poodle as purebred Golden Retrievers are never black. They are therefore more commonly found in back-cross generations such as an F1b, F1bb or F2b Goldendoodle.

Chocolate F2 Goldendoodle

Chocolate F2 Goldendoodles have a solid brown coat that can range from a very light shade to a dark brown. White F2 Goldendoodle

White F2 Goldendoodles look a lot like Labradoodles as they are so pale. They feature a solid pure white coat that can be curly or wavy and usually have black noses and dark colored eyes.

It is extremely rare to find white coats in second generation Goldendoodles as the gene for a white coat can only be inherited from the Poodle side. That is why White Goldendoodles are really only seen in back-cross generations such as F1b, F1bb and F2b Goldendoodles.

Both generations have the same genetic makeup of 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle.

F1 Goldendoodles are said to have more hybrid vigour than F2 Goldendoodles as they are the first time the breed has been created. That being said, F1 Goldendoodles are less predictable in terms of physical traits and temperament compared to F2 Goldendoodles. It can be a bit of a gamble as to whether an F1 Goldendoodle will look more like a Poodle or more like a Golden Retriever while it is easy to predict the appearance of an F2 Goldendoodle by looking at their parents.

Generally, F2 Goldendoodles are a bit more expensive than F1 Goldendoodles. This is mainly because the breeding process takes longer and also because the appearance of the puppies is more predictable. F3 Goldendoodles, on the other hand, are created by breeding an F2 Goldendoodle with another F2 Goldendoodle. F3 Goldendoodles are multigen while F2 Goldendoodles are not.

A Goldendoodle is considered to be multigen when the dog’s parents and grandparents are Goldendoodles rather than a purebred Golden Retriever or Poodle. All generations after F2 Goldendoodles are multigen. That means that F3 Goldendoodles and beyond are multigen.

Both F2 Goldendoodles and F3 Goldendoodles have the same genetic makeup. They are both 50% Poodle and 50% Golden Retriever. For this reason, they have very similar physical characteristics as well as similar temperaments. The main difference is that F3 Goldendoodles have less hybrid vigour than F2 Goldendoodles as it decreases with each successive generation that is bred.
