What Does A Red Poodle Look Like?

Red Poodles come in a variety of shades from light red to dark red. Their coats can be anywhere from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color. While there is such a broad range of colors of Red Poodle they are usually further broken down into smaller categories. For example, Poodles with lighter toned red coats are usually called Apricot Poodles.

Are Red Poodles Rare?

Red is one of the rarest coat colors for Poodles as it is quite difficult to breed them. They are not like Merle Poodles which are rare because they have an unofficial coat color. It is the opposite situation as red has been recognized as a standard coat color by the American Kennel Club (AKC) since 1980. Red Poodles are just rare because both parents need to carry the gene to produce the coat color in their off-spring.

Coat Color Changes

Do Red Poodles Change Color?

Red Poodles can change color with age however not all will. If a Poodle carries the ‘fading gene’, ‘dilution’ gene or ‘progressive graying’, they may experience coat color changes. These changes will usually occur within the first two years of their life however not all Red Poodles will change color. If a Red Poodle changes color, their coat will fade to a light red or apricot color.

Red Poodles can also change color from UV light exposure. If your Red Poodle spends a lot of time out in the sun, it is likely that their coat will fade to an apricot color.

In reality, Light Red Poodles are Apricot Poodles as they have such a light colored coat. A lot of Red Poodles end up being Light Red Poodles as adults as their coats fade with age.

Red Parti Poodles have a white base coat that covers at least 50% of their body with red patches. The red patches are usually located on their ears, around their eyes and on their backs. The patches can be anywhere from a light red to a deep, dark red.

Red and Black Poodle

Red and Black Poodles are a type of Phantom Poodle. Phantom Poodles have a coat with a solid background and a secondary color in patches in very specific locations. These locations include the chin, throat, chest, legs, beneath their tail, above their eyes or on the sides of their muzzle. In this case the solid background is black and the secondary color is a tannish red.

Some Red Poodles are not fully red in color but rather feature white patches on their chest, paws, chin and top of their muzzle. That being said, Red Poodles with white chests are not as common as solid Red Poodles. You are more likely to find red and white coats in Poodle mix breeds like Maltipoos and Cavapoos.

Coat Color Comparisons

Apricot vs Red Poodle

The main difference between an Apricot Poodle and a Red Poodle is the intensity of the red color of their coat. “Red” is usually used as a blanket term to describe every shade of red coat from light to dark while “Apricot” is specifically used for Poodles that have a very light red coat. Apricot Poodles often have peachy undertones in their coat and sometimes they are so light that they are nearly cream in color.

Brown vs Red Poodle

Some people get confused between Brown Poodles and Red Poodles because in many cases Red Poodles have a rusty-brownish red coat. Real Brown Poodles feature a much richer brown coat than the rusty-red of a Red Poodle. That is why Brown Poodles are often called Chocolate Poodles because their coat resembles the color of milk or dark chocolate.

Red Poodle Shedding

Do Red Poodles Shed?

Red Poodles are classified as light to non-shedders. They will drop a few strands of hair here and there throughout the year but will not undergo heavy seasonal shedding like other breeds. Their light-shedding characteristic is one of the main reasons why Poodles are crossed with other breeds to create light to non-shedding ‘doodle’ dog breeds like GoldendoodlesLabradoodlesAussiedoodlesCavapoos and more!

Are Red Poodles Hypoallergenic?

Red Poodles, like all other Poodle coat colors and patterns, are considered to be hypoallergenic as they do not produce or release much allergy inducing dander into their immediate environment. Sometimes smaller sizes of Poodle such as Toy Poodles are considered to be more hypoallergenic than other Poodle sizes as smaller dogs produce less dander than larger dogs.
