What Does A Red Goldendoodle Look Like?

Red Goldendoodles come in a variety of shades from light red to dark red. Their coats can be anywhere from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color. While there is such a broad range of colors of Red Goldendoodles they are usually further broken down into smaller categories. For example, Goldendoodles with lighter toned red coats are usually called Apricot Goldendoodles.

What Is A Red Abstract Goldendoodle?

Red Abstract Goldendoodles have a solid red coat with white markings that cover less than 50% of their body. Usually the white patches are on their chest, paws or muzzle. They are also known as Red and White Goldendoodles.

Red Abstract Goldendoodles are sometimes mistaken for Parti Goldendoodles as they both feature red and white in their coat. The difference is that Parti Goldendoodles have a white base coat that is at least 50% of their body while Abstract Goldendoodles have a solid color base coat with white on less than 50% of their body.

Apricot vs Red Goldendoodle

The main difference between an Apricot and a Red Goldendoodle is the intensity of the red color of their coat. “Red” is usually used as a blanket term to describe every shade of red coat from light to dark while “Apricot” is specifically used for Goldendoodles that have a very light red coat. Apricot Goldendoodles often have peachy undertones in their coat and sometimes they are so light that they are nearly cream in color.

Are Red Goldendoodles Rare?

Red Goldendoodles are not rare. Red is a dominant Poodle gene so if a Golden Retriever is bred with a Red Poodle it is likely that many of the puppies in the litter will inherit this coat color.

Coat Types

There are three main coat types Red Goldendoodles can have: wavy, curly or straight hair. Wavy and curly coats are the most common while straight coats are usually seen in reverse Goldendoodle generations where the Goldendoodle has been bred back to a Golden Retriever instead of a Poodle.

Red Goldendoodle Wavy Coat

Wavy coats are one of the most common Goldendoodle coat types. Their coats feature light, loose waves and give Goldendoodles a teddy bear appearance. You usually find Red Goldendoodles with wavy coats in first generation litters.

Red Goldendoodle Curly Coat

Curly coats are the next most common coat type. They are much denser and thicker than wavy coats and more closely resemble the coat of a Poodle. Red Goldendoodles with curly coats are usually seen in back-cross generations where the Goldendoodle has been bred back to a Poodle e.g. F1b, F1bb and F2b Goldendoodles. Curly coats are usually more hypoallergenic than other coat types.

Red Goldendoodle Straight Hair

Straight Hair Goldendoodles look a lot more like Golden Retrievers than Poodles. They are usually not as hypoallergenic as wavy or curly coat Goldendoodles as they usually are from a generation that has a higher percentage of Golden Retriever genes than Poodle genes.

Red Goldendoodles may fade as they mature. If this happens, it will occur within the first two years of their life. They may end up looking more like an Apricot Goldendoodle. This is especially the case if they have inherited the “fading” gene from the Poodle.

Do Red Goldendoodles Shed?

Red Goldendoodle do not shed much at all. They only drop a few strands of hairs here and there throughout the year. That is why they are classified as non to low shedders. Cross-back generations of Red Goldendoodle such as F1b, F1bb or F2b shed less than F1 Red Goldendoodles.

Are Red Goldendoodles Hypoallergenic?

Red Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic as they are a low shedding breed and therefore do not release much allergy inducing dander into their surroundings. Red Goldendoodles that have a higher percentage of Poodle genes such as F1b Red Goldendoodles are even more hypoallergenic than F1 Red Goldendoodles.

You can make your dog even more hypoallergenic by keeping up a good grooming routine as it will stop them from releasing allergens into your home.

Your dog’s grooming routine should include both brushing and bathing. A brush down with a slicker brush every other day is ideal to remove any loose hairs. As for washing, a bath with a gentle dog shampoo every 3 months will remove dead skin cells, dirt and debris.

This may not seem that often but you don’t want to over wash your dog otherwise their coat will dry out which will only cause flaky skin which is an allergy irritant.

The size of a Red Goldendoodle depends on the size of Poodle the Golden Retriever was crossed with. There are four main sizes that Red Goldendoodles come in including Teacup, Toy, Mini, Medium and Standard.

Teacup Red Goldendoodle

Teacup Red Goldendoodles are one of the smallest Goldendoodle sizes (with the exception of the Micro Goldendoodles that are an inch or two shorter). They are usually a multigenerational breed created by breeding two Toy Red Goldendoodle runts together. Teacup Red Goldendoodles get to 8 to 13 inches (20.3cm to 33cm) at the shoulder and weigh between 7 and 10 pounds (3.2kg to 4.5kg).

Toy Red Goldendoodle

Toy Red Goldendoodles are slightly larger than Teacup Red Goldendoodles. They get to 10 to 16 inches (25.4cm to 40.6cm) tall at the shoulder and weigh between 10 and 25 pounds (4.5kg to 11.3kg) when fully grown. They reach their full adult size between 8 and 11 months of age.

Mini Red Goldendoodle

Mini Red Goldendoodles get to 15 to 17 inches (38.1cm to 43.2cm) tall at the shoulder and weigh between 15 and 35 pounds (6.8kg to 15.9kg) when fully grown. They reach their full adult size between 11 and 13 months of age.

Medium Red Goldendoodle

Medium Red Goldendoodles are the second largest Goldendoodle size. They get to a height of 17 to 20 inches (43.2cm to 50.8cm) and weigh between 35 and 50 pounds (15.9kg to 22.7kg) when fully grown.

Standard Red Goldendoodle

Standard Red Goldendoodles are 20 to 26 inches (50.8cm to 66cm) tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 90 pounds (22.7kg to 40.8kg). They reach their full adult size between 12 and 16 months of age. Standard Red Goldendoodles are the largest size of the breed.

Red Goldendoodles are highly excitable dogs by nature. They love spending time around people and other animals alike and are so affectionate and gentle. Red Goldendoodles are keen to please which makes them pretty easy to train. They are also relatively easy to care for. The only real complaint of owners is the constant grooming requirements of Goldendoodles.

F1 Red Goldendoodle

An F1 Red Goldendoodle is the first generation of the breed created by crossing a purebred Golden Retriever with either a purebred Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle. An F1 Red Goldendoodle is 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle.

F1b Red Goldendoodle

An F1b Red Goldendoodle is created by crossing an F1 Red Goldendoodle with a purebred Poodle that is either Toy, Miniature or Standard sized. The resulting dog is 25% Golden Retriever and 75% Poodle.

F1bb Red Goldendoodle

An F1bb Red Goldendoodle is a cross between an F1b Red Goldendoodle (Goldendoodle x Poodle) and a purebred Poodle which can be Toy, Miniature or Standard sized. They are 12.5% Golden Retriever and 87.5% Poodle.

F2 Red Goldendoodle

An F2 Red Goldendoodle is the second generation of the breed created by breeding a F1 Red Goldendoodle with another F1 Red Goldendoodle. They are 50% Golden Retriever and 50% Poodle.
