Merle Pomchi
Merle Pomchis feature a distinctly patterned coat with speckles of various colors throughout it as they carry the merle gene. They can either be a Blue Merle or Red Merle Pomchi.
A Blue Merle Pomchi has a blue, grey, white and tan coat. They would have originally had a solid black coat but the merle gene diluted it into other shades. The merle gene also affects eye color and skin pigmentation on the nose and paws so they may have blue eyes and pink patches on their nose and paws.
A Red Merle Pomchi features a mottled coat with red, copper, beige and white patches. The merle gene may result in them having blue eyes and areas of their skin that lack pigmentation.Â
Neither the Pomeranian nor the Chihuahua originally carried the merle gene however it has been introduced into both the Chihuahua and Pomeranian lineage through other breeds. There are some concerns about how ethical it is to breed Merle Pomchis as if a breeder breed two dogs together that carry the merle gene there is a high risk of producing “double merles” which are likely to suffer from severe ocular and auditory defects. That is why merle is not an officially recognized coat color for many kennel clubs.
