What Is A Red Labradoodle?

Red Labradoodles have a coat that can range from light red to dark red in color. Their coats can be anywhere from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color. They have black noses and dark brown eyes. Red Labradoodles with lighter red coats are usually called Apricot Labradoodles.

Are Red Labradoodles Rare?

Red Labradoodles are very rare. The red coat is thought to be one of the rarest colors for Labradoodles as it is a recessive gene that is only found in the Poodle gene pool. That is why they are more common in back-cross generations like F1b and F1bb Labradoodles.

Apricot vs Red Labradoodle

The main difference between an Apricot Labradoodle and a Red Labradoodle is the intensity of the red color of their coat. “Red” is usually used as a blanket term to describe every shade of red coat from light to dark while “Apricot” is specifically used for Labradoodles that have a very light red coat. Apricot Labradoodles often have peachy undertones in their coat and sometimes they are so light that they are nearly cream in color.

Coat Types

There are three main coat types Red Labradoodles can have: wavy, curly or straight hair. Wavy and curly coats are the most common while straight coats are usually seen in reverse Labradoodle generations where the Labradoodle has been bred back to a Labrador Retriever instead of a Poodle.

Red Labradoodle Wavy Coat

Wavy coats are one of the most common Labradoodle coat types. Their coats feature light, loose waves and give Labradoodles a teddy bear appearance. You usually find Red Labradoodles with wavy coats in first generation litters.

Red Labradoodle Curly Coat

Curly coats are the next most common coat type. They are much denser and thicker than wavy coats and more closely resemble the coat of a Poodle. Red Labradoodles with curly coats are usually seen in back-cross generations where the Labradoodle has been bred back to a Poodle e.g. F1b, F1bb and F2b Labradoodles. Curly coats are usually more hypoallergenic than other coat types.

Red Labradoodle Straight Hair

Straight Hair Labradoodles look a lot more like Labrador Retrievers than Poodles. They are usually not as hypoallergenic as wavy or curly coat Labradoodles as they usually are from a generation that has a higher percentage of Labrador Retriever genes than Poodle genes. Hardly any straight hair Labradoodles have red hair but it is possible.

Coat Color Variations

Red Fox Labradoodle

Red Fox Labradoodles have a rich foxy red colored coat. There is nothing unique that establishes a Red Fox Labradoodle from any other Red Labradoodle, it is just another name for the same colored dog.

Red Merle Labradoodle

Red Merle Labradoodles have a liver (red/brown), copper, beige and white coat in a mottled or speckled pattern. Most of their coat is a beige-grey and they feature brown, white and copper patches throughout it. Red Merle Labradoodles have light or dark brown noses and in most cases they have brown or hazel eyes. They would have originally had a solid liver (brown/red) coat but the merle gene diluted sections of it into lighter colors.

Most Red and White Labradoodles are mainly red with small white patches however they can also be mainly white with red patches. Ones that are mainly white with red patches are called Parti Labradoodles.

Red Parti Labradoodles have a white base coat that covers at least 50% of their body with red patches. The red patches can range in color from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color and are usually located on their ears, around their eyes and on their backs.

Dark Red Labradoodle

Dark Red Labradoodles have a very deep red colored coat. Sometimes it is so dark that it appears to be brown. Sometimes people confuse Dark Red Labradoodles with Chocolate Labradoodles.

Do Red Labradoodles Fade?

Red Labradoodles can fade as they get older. If this happens, it will occur within the first two years of their life. They may end up looking more like an Apricot Labradoodle. This is especially the case if they have inherited the “fading” gene from the Poodle.

Red Labradoodles have a lifespan of 12 to 15 years. There are many factors that affect the lifespan of a Red Labradoodle including size, gender, generation and whether they are desexed or intact. These variables mean they can have shorter or longer lifespans than the average. The size of a Red Labradoodle depends on the size of Poodle the Labrador Retriever was crossed with. The three most common Red Labradoodle sizes are Mini, Medium and Standard. You can also sometimes find Red Teacup and Toy Labradoodles however they are not as common.

Red Mini Labradoodle

Red Mini Labradoodles get to a height of 14 to 16 inches (35.6cm to 40.6cm) tall at the shoulder and weigh between 15 and 25 pounds (6.8kg to 11.3kg) when fully grown.

Red Medium Labradoodle

Red Medium Labradoodles get to a height of 16 to 20 inches (40.6cm to 50.8cm) tall at the shoulder. They weigh between 25 and 50 pounds (11.3kg to 22.7kg) when fully grown.

Red Standard Labradoodle

Red Standard Labradoodles get to a height of 20 to 26 inches (50.8cm to 66.0cm) tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 100 pounds (22.7kg to 45.4kg). They are the largest and most common Labradoodle size besides the Miniature Labradoodle.

Red Labradoodle Generations

F1 Red Labradoodle

An F1 Red Labradoodle is the first generation of the breed created by crossing a purebred Labrador Retriever with either a purebred Toy, Miniature or Standard Red Poodle. A Red F1 Labradoodle is 50% Labrador Retriever and 50% Poodle.

F1b Red Labradoodle

An F1b Red Labradoodle is created by crossing an F1 Red Labradoodle with a purebred Red Poodle that is either Toy, Miniature or Standard sized. A Red F1b Labradoodle is 25% Labrador Retriever and 75% Poodle. You are much more likely to find Labradoodles with red coats in the F1b generation than the F1 generation as they inherit the coat color from the Poodle.

F1bb Red Labradoodle

An F1bb Red Labradoodle is a cross between an F1b Red Labradoodle (Labradoodle x Poodle) and a purebred Red Poodle which can be toy, miniature or standard sized. They are 12.5% Labrador Retriever and 87.5% Red Poodle. You are more likely to find Labradoodles with red coats in the F1bb generation than the F1 generation.

F2 Red Labradoodle

An F2 Red Labradoodle is the second generation of the breed created by breeding a F1 Red Labradoodle with another F1 Red Labradoodle. They are 50% Labrador Retriever and 50% Red Poodle.

Do Red Labradoodles Shed?

Red Labradoodles do not shed much at all. They only drop a few strands of hairs here and there throughout the year. That is why they are classified as non to low shedders. Cross-back generations of Red Labradoodle such as F1b, F1bb or F2b shed less than F1 Red Labradoodles.

Are Red Labradoodles Hypoallergenic?

Red Labradoodles are hypoallergenic as they are a low shedding breed and therefore do not release much allergy inducing dander into their surroundings. Red Labradoodles that have a higher percentage of Poodle genes such as F1b Red Labradoodles are even more hypoallergenic than F1 Red Labradoodles.
