What Does F1 Labradoodle Mean?

The “F” in F1 Labradoodle means “filial” and the “1” means first generation. “Filial” is simply a way to denote generation. If a Labradoodle is F1, it means that it is a first generation puppy – the result of crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle.

What Is An F1 Labradoodle?

An F1 Labradoodle is the first generation of the breed created by crossing a purebred Labrador Retriever with either a purebred Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle. An F1 Labradoodle is 50% Labrador Retriever and 50% Poodle.

F1 Labradoodles are a medium to large breed with wavy or curly coats that are quite thick. F1 Labradoodles have small floppy ears on a round face with brown eyes. They usually have light brown noses but they can also be black. F1 Labradoodles can come in a range of colors but are most commonly have caramel, red, chocolate, cream or parti coats.

What Is An F1 Mini Labradoodle?

An F1 Mini Labradoodle is created by crossing a purebred Labrador Retriever with a Miniature Poodle. It is the first generation of the breed. An F1 Mini Labradoodle is 50% Labrador Retriever and 50% Miniature Poodle.

Do F1 Labradoodles Shed?

F1 Labradoodles do not shed much at all. They are classified as as a light to non-shedding breed. One of the reasons why the Poodle was originally crossed with the Labrador Retriever was to reduce the heavy shedding trait of the Labrador Retriever whilst retaining its good nature and temperament.

The best way to reduce the amount that your dog sheds is to regularly brush them. Slicker brushes are great for dogs with single coats and deshedding tools are great for dogs with double coats.

Are F1 Labradoodles Hypoallergenic?

Yes, F1 Labradoodles are considered to be hypoallergenic. Dogs are hypoallergenic when they don’t shed much and therefore don’t release much allergy inducing dander (dead skin cells) into their immediate environment. That being said, there are other generations of Labradoodle that are more hypoallergenic than the F1 generation e.g F1b or F1bb Labradoodles.

F1 Labradoodle Coat Types

There are three main coat types F1 Labradoodles can have: wavy, curly or straight hair. Wavy coats are the most common for F1 Labradoodles and curly/shaggy coats are the next most common. Very curly coats are generally seen in cross back generations such as F1b or F1bb Labradoodles as they have a higher percentage of Poodle genes. Straight coats/flat coats aren’t that common for F1 Labradoodles as they are usually seen in reverse Labradoodle generations where the Labradoodle has been bred back to a Labrador Retriever instead of a Poodle. F1 Labradoodle Coat Colors

F1 Black Labradoodle

F1 Black Labradoodles feature a solid black coat with a black nose and dark eyes. They may have small white patches over their body like on their chest or paws however these as technically Black and White Labradoodles. F1 Black Labradoodles are usually created by breeding a Black Labrador with a Black Poodle.

F1 Chocolate Labradoodle

F1 Chocolate Labradoodles feature a solid brown coat that can range from a very light to a rich brown tone. Some F1 Chocolate Labradoodles are so dark that they’re almost black while others are more of a milk chocolate or silver-beige color. Their noses and eyes are brown.

F1 White Labradoodle

F1 White Labradoodles have a slightly off-white coat color. They have black or brown noses and dark colored eyes. F1 White Labradoodles are also known as Chalk Labradoodles as their coat color is a very similar shade to chalk.

F1 Red Labradoodle

F1 Red Labradoodles come in a variety of shades from light red to dark red. Their coats can be anywhere from a reddish cream to a rusty brown color. They have black noses and dark brown eyes. F1 Labradoodles with lighter red coats are usually called Apricot Labradoodles.

F1 Parti Labradoodle

A F1 Parti Labradoodle has a white base coat that covers at least 50% of their body with a secondary color marbled through it. Most of the time the secondary color is black, apricot, red or cream.

F1 Labradoodle Haircuts

There are many different haircuts that you can give a F1 Labradoodle. Some popular ones include:

Teddy Bear Cut

The Teddy Bear Cut is a very common haircut for F1 Labradoodles. As the name suggests, it gives Labradoodles the appearance of being a teddy bear. The length of hair is between 0.5 and 1.5 inches on the body while leg and paw hair is kept quite short. What really gives Labradoodles the teddy bear appear is trimming the head into a rounded shape with scissors. Their face hair is then blended into their body hair.

Puppy Cut

The Puppy Cut is probably the second most popular haircut. Their hair is cut to 1.5 inches all over their body and legs. Ear hair is also left quite long. Some dog groomers don’t distinguish between Puppy Cuts and Teddy Bear Cuts as they are so similar but generally the length of hair is longer in a Puppy Cut than a Teddy Bear cut.

Summer Cut

The Summer Cut is most popular for F1 Labradoodles during warm weather months as it will keep them feeling cool. It’s a very simple haircut where all of their hair is cut down to 0.5 inches or less all over their body. Be careful when asking a groomer for this haircut as some will interpret it as a full shave however shaving a dog isn’t always the best idea. This is because it increases the risk of sunburn, skin cancer and heat stroke. Their hair also may not grow back the same.

Lamb Cut

Lamb Cuts are most commonly done on Labradoodles that have curly hair or a wool coat. As the name suggests, it gives them the appearance of a lamb. The length of body hair is roughly 1 inch and then their leg hair is left a bit longer with rounding on their paws. Their faces are generally trimmed leaving quite long ear hair length.

F1 Mini Labradoodle

A Mini F1 Labradoodle gets to 14 to 16 inches (35.6cm to 40.6cm) tall at the shoulder and weighs between 15 and 25 pounds (6.8kg to 11.3kg) when fully grown.

F1 Medium Labradoodle

A Medium F1 Labradoodle gets to 16 to 20 inches (40.6cm to 50.8cm) tall at the shoulder and weighs between 25 and 50 pounds (11.3kg to 22.7kg) when fully grown.

F1 Standard Labradoodle

A Standard F1 Labradoodle gets to a height of 20 to 26 inches (50.8cm to 66.0cm) at the shoulder and weighs between 50 and 100 pounds (22.7kg to 45.4kg) when fully grown.

On average, F1 Labradoodles cost between $2700USD and $3000USD however some can be even more expensive if they feature a rare coat color. The F1 generation is generally the cheapest as they are the easiest to breed.

F1 Labradoodle Temperament

F1 Labradoodles have a lively and friendly temperament. They are a great addition to families as they are very gentle and get along well with children. F1 Labradoodles are often described as being outgoing, playful, curious and eager to please. They are a very intelligent breed and respond very well to training from an early age. As they are the first generation, their temperament can either be more like a Poodle or more like a Labrador – it can be quite unpredictable.

What Is The Difference Between An F1 and F1b Labradoodle?

The main difference between an F1 and F1b Labradoodle is the percentage make up of Labrador Retriever to Poodle in each breed. F1 Labradoodles are 50% Poodle and 50% Labrador Retriever while F1b Labradoodles are 75% Poodle and 25% Labrador Retriever. This means that F1b Labradoodles have curlier, more hypoallergenic coats and usually have a leaner, taller build.

What Is The Difference Between An F1 and F2 Labradoodle?

F1 Labradoodles are first generation while F2 Labradoodles are second generation.
