Chiweenie Colors Guide (Black, Dapple, Brindle, Black & Tan etc.)
As a mixed breed dog, Chiweenies come in a wide range of coat colors from solid coats to complex multi-colored markings. They can inherit their coat color from either parent breed – the Chihuahua or the Dachshund.
Chihuahuas come in 9 AKC recognized coat colors including black, black & tan, blue & tan, chocolate, chocolate & tan, cream, fawn, fawn & white and red. Dachshund come in 11 AKC recognized coat colors including black & cream, black & tan, blue & tan, chocolate & tan, cream, red, wheaten, wild boar, blue & cream, fawn (Isabella) & tan, fawn (Isabella) & cream as well as chocolate & cream.

Black Chiweenie
Black Chiweenies feature a solid jet black coat with dark brown eyes and a black nose. They may also feature a small white patch on their chest. Black Chiweenies are quite a common coat color however they are not as common as tan, black & tan or light brown Chiweenies.
Black Chiweenies are created by breeding a solid Black Chiahuahua with a Black & Cream or Black & Tan Dachshund.

Dapple Chiweenie
Dapple Chiweenies have a mottled coat that is either blue, grey, white and tan or red, copper, beige and white. Dapple Chiweenies carry the merle gene which affects their coloring resulting in the distinct pattern. The merle gene also affects eye color and skin pigmentation on the nose and paws. This means that Dapple Chiweenies often have blue eyes and often have pink patches on their nose and paws. Dapple Chiweenies are also called Merle Chiweenies.
Usually Dapple Chiweenie’s are created by breeding a dapple Dachshund with a cream, fawn or chocolate Chihuahua. Dapple is an unofficial colour for Dachshunds however it is relatively common. Breeders cannot breed two dogs that carry the merle gene together to created a Dapple Chiweenie otherwise they’ll end up with a Double Merle Chiweenie. Double Merle’s suffer from severe auditory and ocular defects.

Brindle Chiweenie
Brindle Chiweenie’s have a tiger striped coat that usually features tan and black. Usually the base of their coat is tan and there are faint black stripes over it. The stripes are quite subtle and blend into each other so they sometimes look like a dark brown dog. They may also feature white patches on their belly.

Black & Tan Chiweenie
Black and Tan Chiweenies feature a mainly black coat with tan patches on their muzzle, ends of their legs, chest and above their eyes giving the appearance of eyebrows. They may also have a white patch on their chest and some white on their paws. Black and Tan Chiweenies are one of the most common Chiweenie coat colors. They are created by breeding a black & tan Chihuahua with a black & tan Dachshund.

Black & White Chiweenie
Black and White Chiweenie’s feature a mainly white coat with black patches on their head, ears and their back. They may also feature black spotting on their legs. As a Black and White Chiweenie has a mainly white coat they can also be called Parti Chiweenies. Dogs have a Parti coat when 50% or more of their body is covered in white fur. Black and White Chiweenies are pretty rare.

Merle Chiweenie
Merle Chiweenie’s are the same as Dapple Chiweenie’s. They carry the Merle gene which dilutes sections of their coat into mottled patches. There are two types of Merle Chiweenie – Blue Merle or Red Merle Chiweenies. Blue Merle Chiweenies feature blue, grey, white and tan colors in their coat while Red Merle Chiweenies feature red, copper, beige and white colors.

Chocolate Chiweenie
Chocolate Chiweenies feature a brown coat that can range from light to dark in color. In most cases it is not solid brown but rather features small tan patches on their muzzle and paws. Chocolate Chiweenie’s usually have dark blue eyes and light brown noses.

Grey Chiweenie
In reality, Chiweenie’s do not come in solid grey coats. Sometimes people call Blue Merle Chiweenies “Grey Chiweenies” as they have a lot of grey in their coat. In most cases, grey is the main color in a Blue Merle dog’s coat.
