Aussiedoodle Generations Guide (F1, F1b, F1bb, F2, F2b, F2bb, F3 etc.)

The Aussiedoodle (AKA Aussiepoo or Australian Shepherd Poodle) is a mixed breed dog, the resulting of breeding an Australian Shepherd with a Poodle. As a cross breed, there are many different ways that breeders can mix the two breeds to alter the genetic make up of the Aussiedoodle. The most common Aussiedoodle generations are F1, F1b, F1bb, F2, F2b, F2bb and F3 where each generation has a different percentage mix of Australian Shepherd to Poodle.

These somewhat cryptic letters that denote Aussiedoodle generation can become quite confusing so that is why in this article we will break down what each one means so you can decide which Aussiedoodle generation is most suited to you!

F1 Aussiedoodle Size

How Big Does An F1 Aussiedoodle Get?

The size of an F1 Aussiedoodle depends upon whether the Australian Shepherd was bred with a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle.

  • A Standard F1 Aussiedoodle gets to a height of 15 to 25 inches (25.4cm to 38.1cm) at the shoulder. They weigh between 45 and 70 pounds (20.4kg to 31.8kg).
  • A Mini F1 Aussiedoodle gets to a height of 10 to 15 inches (25.4cm to 38.1cm) at the shoulder and weighs between 15 and 45 pounds (6.8kg to 20.4kg).

Are F1 Aussiedoodles Curly?

F1 Aussiedoodles can have either curly or wavy fur. If F1 Aussiedoodles have curly fur it will be very loose curls rather than tight ones. If you want a super curly Aussiedoodle, cross-back generations such as F1b, F1bb, F2b etc. are much more likely to have curlier fur.

How Much Do F1 Aussiedoodles Shed?

F1 Aussiedoodles do not shed much at all. They are classified as a low to non-shedding breed as they only drop a few strands of hair here and there throughout the year. Cross-back generations of the breed e.g. F1b, F1bb and F2b Aussiedoodles shed even less than F1 Aussiedoodles as they have a higher percentage of Poodle genes and Poodles shed a lot less than Australian Shepherds.

The best way to reduce the amount that your dog sheds is to regularly brush them. Slicker brushes are great for dogs with single coats and deshedding tools are great for dogs with double coats.
