Sheepadoodle Colors (Merle, Golden, Black, Grey, Red etc.)

As a mixed breed dog, Sheepadoodles come in a wide range of coat colors from solid colors to complex multi-colored markings. Old English Sheepdogs come in many coat colors including: grey, blue, black, white and grizzle. Poodles come in 11 colors including black, black & white, brown, white, sable, silver, apricot, grey, red, cream and blue. As a result of the many different colors the parent breeds can be, Sheepadoodles can come in a range of these colors.

What Is A Merle Sheepadoodle?

A Merle Sheepadoodle has mottled patches of different colors on their coat as they carry the merle gene which dilutes certain sections of their coat. This gene also affects eye color and skin pigmentation on the nose and paws. Often Merle Sheepadoodles have a very light eye color such as blue and often have pink patches on their nose and paws.

While other breeds can have both Red Merle and Blue Merle coats, Sheepadoodles only come in a Blue Merle coat. Blue Merle Sheepadoodles originally had a black or dark grey coat where the merle gene diluted patches to create the mottled pattern.

How Do You Get A Merle Sheepadoodle?

Both the Old English Sheepdog and the Poodle can have merle coats so the gene can be introduced into Sheepadoodle lineage from either breed. Nevertheless, it is extremely rare for an Old English Sheepdog to be merle so it is much more likely to be inherited from the Poodle.

*Pro Tip: If you want to know about the genetics of your dog, take a dog DNA test. One of the best DNA tests on the market today is the Embark Vet Dog DNA Test (Get 10% off Two Kits With Code MULTIPACK2)

Are Merle Sheepadoodles Healthy?

Merle Sheepadoodles can be just as healthy as Sheepadoodles with a solid coat color however the merle allele increases the risk of impaired hearing and blindness. The risk increases drastically for homozygous (M/M) Sheepadoodle, also known as Double Merles, as they carry two copies of the M allele.

Common Merle Health Problems

  • Hearing Impairment – up to complete deafness
  • Vision Impairment – up to complete blindness
  • Skin Cancer – an increased risk due to the lack of pigmentation on skin
  • Micropthalmia – rare condition causing small and often non-functional eyeballs (high risk for Double Merles)

Are Merle Sheepadoodles Rare?

Merle Sheepadoodle are very rare. While the merle gene can be found in both the Poodle and Old English Sheepdog, it is quite rare in both breeds, especially the Old English Sheepdog so it is unlikely to be passed onto a Sheepadoodle. Breeders also often avoid breeding this coat color due to the health issues and the careful tracking of genetic lines due to the high risk of breeding Double Merles which have debilitating health issues.

Black Sheepadoodle

Black Sheepadoodle via @oak_the_sheepadoodle

Black Sheepadoodles typically have a solid coat however they can have patches of other colors mixed in. Black Sheepadoodles inherit their coat color from the Poodle and not from the Old English Sheepdog. This means that breeders need to mix a solid Black Poodle with an Old English Sheepdog to create this coat color. For every litter of puppies there will be one or two dogs that have a solid black coat.

Are Black Sheepadoodles Rare?

Yes, Black Sheepadoodles are relatively rare as the black coat can only be inherited from the Poodle side. There will be no Black Sheepadoodles in the litter if the Poodle parent does not have a black coat.

Tri Color Sheepadoodles are a relatively rare coat color that features a mix of black, brown and white.
