The “F” in F1 Bernedoodle means “filial” and the “1” means first generation. “Filial” is simply a way to denote generation. If a Bernedoodle is F1, it means that it is a first generation puppy – the result of crossing a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle.

What Do F1 Bernedoodles Look Like?

F1 Bernedoodles have an equal chance of either looking more like a Poodle or more like a Bernese Mountain Dog. They have wavy or curly medium length fur that comes in many coat colors however they are most usually tri-color, featuring black, white and tan colors in their coat. F1 Bernedoodles can be furnished or unfurnished however majority are furnished. A furnished Bernedoodles has a fluffy look around their muzzle, beard, eyebrows, legs and feet while unfurnished Bernedoodles have a flatter coat.

Tiny F1 Bernedoodle

A Tiny F1 Bernedoodle gets to 12 to 17 inches (30.5cm to 43.2cm) tall and weighs 10 to 24 pounds (4.5kg to 10.9kg) when fully grown. They reach their full size between 8 and 10 months.

Mini F1 Bernedoodle

A F1 Mini Bernedoodle gets to 18 to 22 inches (45.7cm to 55.9cm) tall and weighs 24 to 49 pounds (10.9kg to 22.2kg) when fully grown. A Mini F1 Bernedoodle gets to their full size between 10 and 12 months of age.

Medium F1 Bernedoodle

A F1 Medium Bernedoodle gets to 20 to 26 inches (50.8cm to 66cm) tall at the shoulder and weighs between 24 and 49 pounds (10.9kg to 22.2kg) when fully grown. Medium F1 Bernedoodles are fully grown between 11 and 14 months of age.

Standard F1 Bernedoodle

A F1 Standard Bernedoodle gets to a height of 23 to 29 inches (58.4cm to 73.7cm) tall and weighs between 70 and 90 pounds (31.8kg to 40.8kg) when fully grown.

Do F1 Bernedoodles Shed?

F1 Bernedoodles are classified as light to non-shedders. They only drop a little bit of hair here and there throughout the year and do not go through heavy seasonal shedding like other breeds.

The best way to reduce the amount that your dog sheds is to regularly brush them. Slicker brushes are great for dogs with single coats and deshedding tools are great for dogs with double coats.

Are F1 Bernedoodles Hypoallergenic?

F1 Bernedoodles are hypoallergenic as they are a low shedding breed and therefore do not release much allergy inducing dander into their surroundings. That being said, there are other generations of Bernedoodle that are more hypoallergenic than F1 Bernedoodle such as F1b, F1bb and F2b Bernedoodles. This is because they have a higher percentage of Poodle genes than F1 Bernedoodles and Poodles are hypoallergenic while Bernese Mountain Dogs are not.

F1 Bernedoodles have a loyal, goofy and loveable temperament. They love spending time around their family and are good with children if they have been properly socialised from a young age. F1 Bernedoodles are a high energy dog so they need quite a bit of exercise each day, especially the medium and standard size of the breed. They are quite intelligent which means that they learn tricks and commands quite quickly however they can inherit stubbornness from the Bernese Mountain Dog which means that you need to approach training with patience.

F1 Bernedoodles are first generation while F1b Bernedoodles are the first back-cross generation. F1b Bernedoodles are created by breeding an F1 Bernedooles with a Poodle while an F1 Bernedoodle is created by breeding a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle.

The main difference between an F1 and an F1b Bernedoodle is the genetic makeup. An F1b Bernedoodle is 25% Bernese Mountain Dog and 75% Poodle while an F1 Bernedoodle is 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle.

F1b Bernedoodles are generally taller and leaner than F1 Bernedoodles. They may also have more hypoallergenic and curlier coats than F1 Bernedoodles. F1b Bernedoodles are also usually more expensive than F1b Bernedoodles as the breeding process takes longer.
