Bernedoodle Generations Guide (F1, F1b, F1bb, F2, F2b etc.)

The Bernedoodle (AKA Bernepoo or Bernese Mountain Poo) is a mixed breed dog, the resulting of breeding a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. As a cross breed, there are many different ways that breeders can mix the two breeds to alter the genetic make up on the Bernedoodle. The most common Bernedoodle generations are F1, F1b, F1bb, F2 and F2b where each generation has a different percentage mix of Bernese Mountain Dog to Poodle.

These somewhat cryptic letters that denote Bernedoodle generation can become quite confusing so that is why in this article we will break down what each one means so you can decide which Bernedoodle generation is most suited to you!

F1 Bernedoodle

F1 Bernedoodle

What Is An F1 Bernedoodle?

An F1 Bernedoodle is the first generation of the breed created by crossing a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog with a purebred Poodle (either a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle). They are 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle.

What Do F1 Bernedoodles Look Like?

F1 Bernedoodles have an equal chance of either looking more like a Poodle or more like a Bernese Mountain Dog. They have wavy or curly medium length fur that comes in many colors but they most commonly feature a tri-color coat of black, white and tan.

F1 Bernedoodle Temperament

F1 Bernedoodles have a loyal, goofy and loveable temperament. They love spending time around their family and are good with children if they have been properly socialised from a young age. F1 Bernedoodles are a high energy dog so they need quite a bit of exercise each day, especially the medium and standard size of the breed. They are quite intelligent which means that they learn tricks and commands quite quickly however they can inherit stubbornness from the Bernese Mountain Dog which means that you need to approach training with patience.

Nevertheless, as a mixed breed dog it is hard to determine exactly what the temperament of a Bernedoodle will be as it is unknown what characteristics of the Poodle/Bernese Mountain Dog they will inherit.

F1 Bernedoodle

F1 Bernedoodle Shedding

F1 Bernedoodles are classified as light to non-shedders. The original reason why Bernedoodles were bred was to reduce the amount that a Bernese Mountain Dog sheds whilst keeping characteristics of it’s temperament and appearance.

As F1 Bernedoodles don’t shed much and thus don’t release much dander into the environment, they are considered to be hypoallergenic.

F1 Bernedoodle Price

F1 Bernedoodles cost between $2000 and $5000 USD. They are the most common Bernedoodle generation, making them easier to find which explains the comparatively lower prices in comparison to other generations.

Many other factors beside generation influence the price of a Bernedoodle including the size as well as the coat color.

F1b Bernedoodles may be leaner and taller than F1 Bernedoodles.

Additionally as F1b Berendoodles have a higher percentage of Poodle genes, they are more likely to have a wider range of coat colors like a Poodle instead of the standard tri-color coat of a Bernese Mountain Dog.
