The Bernedoodle (AKA Bernepoo or Bernese Mountain Poo) is a mixed breed dog, the resulting of breeding a Bernese Mountain Dog with a Poodle. As a cross breed, there are many different ways that breeders can mix the two breeds to alter the genetic make up on the Bernedoodle. The most common Bernedoodle generations are F1, F1b, F1bb, F2 and F2b where each generation has a different percentage mix of Bernese Mountain Dog to Poodle.

F1 Bernedoodle

What Is An F1 Bernedoodle?

An F1 Bernedoodle is the first generation of the breed created by crossing a purebred Bernese Mountain Dog with a purebred Poodle (either a Toy, Miniature or Standard Poodle). They are 50% Bernese Mountain Dog and 50% Poodle.

What Do F1 Bernedoodles Look Like?

What Do F1b Bernedoodles Look Like?

In comparison to F1 Bernedoodles, F1b Bernedoodles have a much curlier coat due to the higher percentage of Poodle genes. F1b Reverse Bernedoodles get their name because they are the opposite of the standard F1b Bernedoodle that is 75% Poodle.

Before getting an F2b Bernedoodle, you should ask the breeder how they create this generation. This will give you a better insight into the temperament, size and also how much this generation will shed which are all factors dependant on the percentage mix of Bernese Mountain Dog to Poodle genes.

F2b Bernedoodle Appearance

F2b Bernedoodles generally look more like a Poodle than a Bernese Mountain Dog. With their dominant Poodle genes they tend to be taller and leaner than other Bernedoodles and also have curlier coats. They look similar to F1b Bernedoodles.

F2b Bernedoodle Temperament

F2b Bernedoodles have a temperament that is slightly more characteristic of the Poodle than the Bernese Mountain Dog. F2b Bernedoodles are usually said to be intelligent, affectionate, mischievous and active. That being said, as a mixed breed dog it is hard to determine what characteristics of the Poodle/Bernese Mountain Dog they will inherit and every dog has it’s own unique personality.

F2b Bernedoodle Shedding

Both versions of F2b Bernedoodles (whether they are 62.5% Poodle and 37.5% Bernese Mountain Dog or 25% Bernese Mountain Dog and 75% Poodle) are dogs that are light to non-shedding due to their high percentage of Poodle genes. F2b Bernedoodles that are 75% Poodle shed slightly less than ones that are 62.5% Poodle but the difference is minimal.

Like F1b Bernedoodles, the reason why F2b Bernedoodles are bred is to create a generation that is more hypoallergenic than the F1 or F2 generation. These cross-back generations are generally more suited to people who suffer from allergies.
