Dapple Dachshund

Dapple Dachshunds have a mottled coat that is either blue, grey, white and tan or red, copper, beige and white. Dapple Dachshunds carry the merle gene which affects their coloring resulting in the distinct pattern. The merle gene also affects eye color and skin pigmentation on the nose and paws. This means that Dapple Dachshunds often have blue eyes and often have pink patches on their nose and paws. Dapple Dachshunds are also called Merle Dachshunds.

Dapple is an unofficial colour for Dachshunds however it is relatively common. Breeders cannot breed two dogs that carry the merle gene together otherwise they’ll end up with a Double Dapple Dachshund. Double Dapples’s suffer from severe auditory and ocular defects.

Double Dapple Dachshund

A Double Dapple Dachshund carries two copies of the dominant “M” allele. They are a result of bad breeding practices where breeders have bred two Dapple Dachshunds together which results in a dog that has a very high chance of suffering from ocular defects and deafness. These dogs are also called ‘lethal whites’ as they have little to no colour in their coat.

Double Dapple Dachshunds have created a lot of controversy in the dog world with many official bodies refusing to register dogs that are a product of merle-to-merle breeding. Two Dapple Dachshunds should never be bred together.

Piebald Dachshund

Piebald Dachshunds carry a recessive gene that causes white spotting that is superimposed over sections of a solid coat. The white sections of their coat will have black, brown or grey dots. There may even been ticking where there are even smaller dots on the white. Usually about 80% of their coat is white. Piebald Dachshunds also have white tips on their tails, dark brown noses and dark eyes. Piebald Dachshunds never have blue eyes.

There are also extreme piebalds where over 80% of their coat is white with only a bit of color on their head and tail. Nevertheless, extreme piebalds are not that common. True Piebald Dachshunds are recognized by the American Kennel Club but extreme piebalds are not. Piebald Dachshunds with blue eyes are also not recognised.

English Cream Dachshund

The reason why English Cream Dachshunds are called “English Creams” rather than just “Cream” Dachshunds is because they were originally developed in the United Kingdom. The authentic British line carries the ‘chinchilla gene’ which is unique to the lineage. It’s quite difficult to find true English Cream Dachshunds that come from this lineage nowadays as most cream colored Dachshunds are not pure. That is why authentic English Cream Dachshunds are so expensive.

There are two main types of English Cream Dachshunds: “shaded creams” and “clear creams”. Shaded creams have darker tipped hairs, specifically on their ears and tail while clear creams only have light tipped hairs, specifically on their chest, tail and ears.

Another feature of English Cream Dachshunds is that their coats are exclusively long instead of short/smooth. You can find short haired Dachshunds with a cream coat however they are not true English creams coming from British lineage.

Black Dachshund

Black Dachshunds feature a solid jet black coat with dark brown eyes and a black nose. They may also feature small tan patches on their paws and muzzle however this is technically a Black and Tan Dachshund. While solid black is an accepted coat color by the American Kennel Club, it is quite a rare coat color. You are much more likely to find a Black and Tan or Black and Cream Dachshund.

Black and Tan Dachshund

Black and Tan Dachshunds feature a mainly black coat with tan patches on their muzzle, ends of their legs, chest and above their eyes giving the appearance of tiny eyebrows. Black and Tan Dachshunds are one of the most common Dachshund coat colors. The American Kennel Club recognizes it as a standard coat color.

Blonde Dachshund

Blonde Dachshund is another name for English Cream Dachshunds. They are mainly referring to “clear creams” as they have a cream coat with even lighter tips on their chest, tail and ears. Isabella Dachshund

Isabella Dachshunds (AKA Fawn Dachshunds) have a a pale greyish brown coat. They have blue or light grey eyes and a pink tint on their muzzle. Most Isabella Dachshunds feature a second color such as tan or cream in small patches on their chest, muzzle, paws and above their eyes. They look very similar to a chocolate and tan Dachshund except instead of a solid chocolate coat, they have an extremely pale coat.

The two Isabella coats that are recognized by the American Kennel Club include Isabella & Tan as well as Isabella & Cream. They are standard Dachshund coat colors.

Brindle Dachshund

Brindle Dachshunds have a tiger striped coat that usually features tan and black. Usually the base of their coat is red and there are faint black stripes over it. The stripes are quite subtle and blend into each other so they sometimes look like a dark brown dog. You can also get Brindle Dachshunds in black and tan but they are not as common as the red ones.

Brindle is a dominant gene so only one parent needs to be Brindle to produce a Brindle puppy. The Brindle color is a result of a mutation on the K Locus.

Red Dachshund

Red Dachshunds feature a solid coat that can range from a deep brownish red to a very light, almost yellow shade. Red is recognized by the American Kennel Club and it is also considered to be a standard coat color. Red Dachshunds usually have dark brown eyes and brown noses. Chocolate Dachshunds feature a brown coat that can range from light to dark in color. In most cases it is not solid brown but rather features small tan patches on their muzzle and paws. Chocolate Dachshunds’s usually have dark blue eyes and light brown noses.

Chocolate and Tan Dachshunds are very similar to Black and Tan Dachshunds except they feature a solid brown coat instead of a black one. Sable Dachshund

Sable Dachshunds have hairs that are black-tipped with roots in a lighter solid color. The sable hairs cover most of their body and they usually have a white patches on their chest, muzzle and paws. Sable Dachshunds are most commonly seen in long-haired Dachshunds.

Sometimes Sable Dachshunds are confused with Shaded Cream Dachshunds but these are two distinct coat colors.

Wild Boar Dachshund

Wild Boar is a coat coloring that is mainly seen in wire-haired Dachshunds. Wild Boar Dachshunds have a coarse coat that is mainly black with grey and tan patches throughout. The tan patches are usually on their paws, chest, muzzle, ears and eyebrows. The coat color is also occasionally seen in smooth haired Dachshunds.

Wheaten Dachshund

Wheaten is another wire-haired Dachshund coat color. As the name suggests, their coat is the color of wheat. It can be anywhere between a very light cream color and a darker golden brown that’s almost tan. One of the reasons why the coat color is named after wheat is because the coarse hair of a wire-haired Dachshund paired with the yellowish color gives it the apparance of dried wheat. This coat color was originally only seen in wire-haired Dachshunds but now smooth and long-haired Dachshunds occasionally have it as well.

Grey Dachshund

There isn’t such thing as a Grey Dachshund. Some people mislabel Isabella Dadchshunds as “Grey Dachshunds” as they have a greyish fawn colored coat. Some people also call Dapple Dachshunds or Blue Merle Dachshunds “Grey Dachshunds” as they feature a primarily grey coat with mottled patches.

Dachshund Coat Types

There are three main Dachshund coat types including: long hair, wire hair and smooth hair.

Long Haired Dachshund

Long Haired Dachshunds have coats with silky, long hair. Their hair is longest on their ears, tail, neck, behind their legs and on their belly. Long Haired Dachshunds are not as common as Smooth Haired Dachshunds. They require more attention in terms of grooming as they require weekly brushing to keep their coat in a good condition.

Wire Haired Dachshund

Wire Haired Dachshunds have a medium length coarse and slightly wavy coat. The combination of wavy but coarse hair gives their coats a rough texture. Their hair is usually a bit longer under their chin and around their muzzle, giving the appearance of a beard.

Wire Haired Merle Dachshunds are the least common coat type. They are not as popular as smooth haired or long haired Dachshunds so not many breeders produce them.

Smooth Haired Dachshund

Smooth Haired Dachshunds have short, shiny and dense coats. It is the most common hair type. Smooth Dachshunds are very popular as their coat doesn’t require as much attention as wire-haired or long haired Dachshunds.
