Is My French Bulldog Overweight?

Your French Bulldog may be overweight if you have to push through excess fat to feel their ribs and if don’t have a visible waistline. When looking at a French Bulldog from a birds-eye view they should have a subtle hourglass figure. If they are overweight, their body shape may look very round instead of having a waistline that is thinner than their ribcage and hips.

If you are worried about your French Bulldog being overweight, the best thing you can do is go to the vet to get their professional opinion. They may suggest feeding your Frenchie a different diet or suggest a more vigorous exercise regime. In the meantime, you can try and get your French Bulldog back to a healthier weight by going on more walks, encouraging your Frenchie to run around more and playing active games like fetch. Also stop feeding your Frenchie people food and don’t give them as many treats or snacks.

What Size Crate For A Full Grown French Bulldog?

A Full Grown French Bulldog should use a small sized dog crate dependant on the brand. The best way to measure a Frenchie for a crate is to measure the length from their nose to the base of their tail, then add 2 or 3 inches for the crate measurements.

We recommended the Diggs Revol Dog Crate (pictured below) for Frenchies as is a highly unique design that has been inspired by baby industry quality standards through it’s incorporation of diamond shaped mesh pattern that prevents injury to paws and jaws. Additionally, it is travel friendly as it is collapsible with a carrying handle and wheels and perfect for puppies as it includes a puppy divider and multiple door options!

Birth to 2 Weeks

Between birth and 2 weeks of age, French Bulldogs are deaf and blind. They are unable to look after themselves and are fully dependant on their mothers as the only senses they have are taste and touch. French Bulldogs spend majority of these 2 weeks sleeping and nestling as close to their mother as they can. Their muscles are not developed and they cannot walk.

3 Weeks to 12 Weeks

From 3 weeks to 3 months of age, Frenchies start to become more independent. At the beginning of this period they will get their hearing and sense of smell. Their eyes and ears open so they become much more inquisitive about the world. They start to interact with litter mates, bark and walk a little as their muscles start to get stronger.

French Bulldogs start to become more aware of their surroundings and start to interact with others. Weaning begins during this stage so they start eating food other than their mother’s milk. By 8 weeks, they have full use of their senses and usually go to their new home.

4 Months to 6 Months

Teething begins between 4 and 6 months of age. Many French Bulldogs undergo a big growth spurt at this age as they are only eating puppy food now. At this age, your Frenchie will be at least half their adult weight.

7 Months to 9 Months

Most French Bulldogs reach sexual maturity between 7 and 9 months of age. Female French Bulldogs go through their first heat if they are not desexed.

10 Months to 12 Months

French Bulldogs are nearing their full adult size at 12 months. Frenchies get their adult coat and you’ll eventually have to swap the over to adult food. At this age Labradoodles are extremely active and also very inquisitive. They love exploring their world and learning new things.

Unfortunately, this is the age where you might start having problems with your French Bulldog as it is the adolescent stage. Frenchies may start displaying some regressive behavior like not listening to your training commands, being a bit aggressive or chewing up stuff. This is especially the case if your French Bulldog is not desexed as their hormones will start to kick in. Just remember that this won’t last long and be patient as your Frenchie is a teenager.
