Dog Friendly Blue Mountains – Bushwalks, Off-leash Areas, Camping + More

dog friendly blue mountains

The Blue Mountains is a holiday region west of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is known for its spectacular scenery including the bush full of eucalyptus trees and other native flora and fauna, waterfalls, steep cliffs and cute villages with log-fire guest houses, large gardens and galleries.

Majority of the bushland in the Blue Mountains is national park and therefore the Blue Mountains is often overlooked as a dog friendly tourist destination. But don’t let this assumption stop you from visiting the Blue Mountains with your dog because there are many dog friendly spots including off leash areas, dog friendly accommodation, caravan parks, camping sites and quite the list of dog friendly bush walks.

National Park Policy

There are many national parks throughout New South Wales and the majority of them do not permit dogs and other domestic pets because they are a refuge for native Australian animals. This is the case for the Blue Mountains National Park.

There are many reasons why dogs are not allowed in National Parks including:

  • National parks reserves are a refuge for native Australian animals
  • A dog can cause native fauna stress which may lead to them leaving their homes and young unprotected
  • Your dog is at high risk of getting a tick or snake bite in the bush
  • Kangaroos and other native animals can become aggressive to defend themselves and injure your dog
  • Poisonous baits are located in parks to control foxes and a dog could die if he/she ingests one

All of the dog locations provided below are not National Park and are therefore dog friendly. Also all of the tables are provided in suburb order from lower Blue Mountains to upper Blue Mountains.
