Are Orthopedic Dog Beds Worth It?

Yes, orthopedic dog beds are worth it because they can alleviate paint, relieve pressure points, increase blood flow and also promote joint health. This is highly beneficial for senior dogs with health issues such as arthritis. An orthopedic dog bed is also worth it for younger dogs as it can be a proactive measure to reduce the risk of health problems later on. Finally, an orthopedic bed is very comfortable due to it’s memory foam composition, improving your dog’s sleep quality whilst also encouraging your dog to get off your bed and onto their own!

Why An Orthopedic Dog Bed Is Worth It

1. Alleviates Pain

A dog that sleeps on an ordinary bed for many hours on end might feel some pain in their spines or backs. Additionally, dogs that have pre-existing conditions such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, inflammation, soft tissue injuries, bone injuries and other joint injuries might also find sleeping on an ordinary dog bed very uncomfortable. Luckily, such pains can be easily relieved with an orthopaedic mattress as this type of bedding has a firm surface which will improve your dog’s posture while sleeping thus decreases aches and pains.

2. A Proactive Measure For A Younger Dog

While orthopedic beds are usually prescribed to senior dogs suffering from arthritis and other maladies, there is no reason why you can’t take the proactive measure to reduce the likelihood of these issues for a younger dog. This is especially applicable to working dogs who have strenuous duties as well as dogs that participate in sports. Unfortunately wear and tear will add up.

3. Relieves Pressure Points

A orthopedic dog bed relieves pressures points as the memory foam is designed to conform to a dog’s body which helps evenly distribute your dog’s weight throughout the mattress. As the weight is evenly distributed, your dog’s body is support all the way across and thus the pressure points are relieved.

4. Increases Blood Flow

As pressure points are removed from your dog’s body, it allows better blood flow to these areas. This is especially beneficial to working and sporting dogs who need to have fast recovery times.

5. Promotes Joint Health

Due to the high density of memory foam, an orthopedic dog bed can prevent common joint problems for dogs as the surface is very supportive. Much like how an orthopedic bed can relieve pressure points, it also improves joint health as your dog’s weight is evenly distributed throughout the mattress.

6. Gets Your Dog Off Your Bed And Onto Their Own!

As the memory foam composition of an orthopedic dog bed is so comfortable, your dog will not want to spend a second not lying on it!

If your dog currently sleeps on your bed and you are not enjoying it, definitely consider investing in an orthopedic dog bed as with the right training your dog will be peacefully sleeping on it every single night without fail!

7. Long Lasting

Another non-health related advantage of an orthopedic dog bed is that they are generally very long lasting due to their better construction. Most memory foam mattresses are made from a high resilience foam that is extremely durable. Moreover, the open cell structure of memory foam as increases air circulation through the dog bed, overall keeping it in better condition.

This means you will not have to spend additional money on replacing your dog’s bed every year or so. Additionally, this type of dog bed will probably save you money in the long run due to its caring nature that reduces the need to pay for vet bills.

Why An Orthopedic Dog Bed Might Not Be Worth It For You

1. More Expensive Than Ordinary Dog Beds

Unfortunately, orthopedic dog beds are much more pricey than ordinary dog beds. This is down to it’s overall better construction and the additional cost of filling a bed with memory foam instead of synthetic filling.

2. Heavier & Bulkier Than Ordinary Dog Beds

Memory foam is a very dense and thus very heavy material. This makes it much more difficult to move an orthopedic dog bed from room to room in comparison to a light weight synthetic fibre filled dog bed. As a dog bed is not that large, this should not be too much of a concern however if you do like to move your dog’s bed around a lot, an orthopedic dog bed might not be the best option for you out of convenience.
